Sustainability

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide the framework for Hand in Hand’s programmes, and how we define their success.

SDG 1

SDG 1 aims to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere”. Our target around household income – to raise it among members by an average 30 percent – aligns with this foundational goal.

SDG 2

SDG 2 aims to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”. Hand in Hand has pledged to permanently eliminate food insecurity among our members and trained tens of thousands of farmers in sustainable agriculture practices.

SDG 5

SDG 5 aims to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”. Across our network, some 90 percent of our members are women. We target improved household decision-making and enhanced community participation among 80 percent and 30 percent of them respectively.

SDG 8

SDG 8 aims to “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”. Sustainable livelihoods are Hand in Hand’s specialty. In the 15 years since we first launched, we’ve helped create more than 3.5 million of them.

Environment

Hand in Hand’s biggest environment-focused programme is made possible by the generosity one of our biggest corporate partnerships.

In April 2016, Hand in Hand teamed up with the IKEA Foundation to help thousands of women and young people in rural Kenya work towards a brighter, more environmentally friendly future. The four-year project aims to help 43,200 impoverished women and young people thrive as eco-entrepreneurs, adopting farming techniques such as crop diversification that can stand up to climate change, or launching other green businesses such as beekeeping or waste recycling. As Kenya’s worst drought in years continues to ravage parts of the country, rendering some 2.7 million people food insecure, the programme is more urgent than ever, and picking up pace.

Sustainable jobs

Think of sustainability and what comes to mind: the environment, climate change?

Hand in Hand’s definition of “sustainability” certainly includes environmental issues, but it also goes a little further. For us, sustainability also means durable livelihoods – jobs that long outlast our training and support.
