In 2013, Hand in Hand pledged to “scale up job creation rapidly and effectively by co-operating with partners”. Then we got to work doing it. By the time we’re done, we aim to create 3.5 million jobs by partnering with governments and like-minded NGOs. Read on to find out who we’re working so far.

    European Union

We’ve expanded into Samangan Province, Afghanistan thanks to a US $1.16 million (€840,000) grant from the European Union (EU). Launched in February 2014, the partnership aims to create 5,400 small businesses and 8,100 sustainable jobs, benefiting some 56,700 family members.

Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust

The Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust is backing our one-year Water Entrepreneurs pilot project, which works to harness social entrepreneurship to fight water scarcity in Kenya. It also funds our work in Afghanistan.

Hand in Hand was approved as a Basic Partner of crowdsourcing pioneer Kiva in early-2014, and now qualifies for funding of up to US $400,000. Kiva users worldwide have been lending to Hand in Hand entrepreneurs in Kenya ever since.

    Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency

Funding for our program in Kenya is provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The partnership has already helped created some 36,500 jobs in rural Kenya, benefiting an estimated 180,000 family members. With Sida’s help, we aim to help create 28,000 more.

    UN Women

Hand in Hand was the main implementing partner in a major job creation program funded by UN Women in South Africa. The program aimed to mobilize 25,000 women around our job creation model.

Our three-year, US $3.2 million partnership with CARE International in Rwanda blends the best of both organizations, combining CARE’s experience mobilizing savings groups with Hand in Hand’s expertise training rural populations, mostly women, to start their own businesses. The project is expected to create 80,000 jobs by 2015.

    World Vision

In 2009, Hand in Hand India was invited by Visão Mundial (World Vision Brazil) to share its approach to training grassroots entrepreneurs. The two-year pilot project, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, resulted in the formation of more than 100 local Self-Help Groups in three provinces of northeast Brazil.

    Government Partners

Afghanistan Rural Enterprise Development Programme (AREDP)

The AREDP is a US $600 million government project to create 2.15 million jobs. Hand in Hand Afghanistan complements and extends the program’s work by operating in remote communities other NGOs can’t reach – a hurdle we overcome by ensuring our staff live and work in the communities they serve. In some of the most remote areas 55 percent of people live in poverty, but only 1 percent have received support from NGOs.

Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP)

Hand in Hand is a key partner of the Kenyan government’s ASDSP, which aims to “transform Kenya’s agricultural sector into an innovative, commercially oriented, competitive and modern industry”. We work to mobilize groups, provide training and link farmers to larger markets.

    Meet our global team

Our network leaders have helped shape life in Hand in Hand’s operating countries. Click below to find out how

"Your work is amazing and incredibly impactful. I wish all our partners were as stellar as Hand in Hand India."
    Matt Damon | Co-founder | water.org
"I acknowledge with thanks the capacity building and hand-holding support which Hand in Hand India offered us at the start of our initiative." Raynald Miranda | National Facilitator of Gol-D methodology | Visal Mundial (World Vision Brazil)
"CARE has found that community savings groups meet the need for savings and credit at the very bottom rung of the world’s economic ladder. They create a platform from which the poor can advance to receive the more sophisticated financial services that they inevitably need as their resources, skills and confidence grow. Our partnership With Hand in Hand is a fantastic opportunity to pool our expertise on savings-led microfinance with Hand in Hand International’s long experience of job creation."
John Plastow | Program Director | CARE International UK
